History & Culture
Origins in a sea cave
By shrine tradition the deities were first enshrined in 552, when by imperial decree of Emperor Kinmei they were venerated in the Iwaya cave at the southern tip of Enoshima.
The three Munakata goddesses
Its three sanctuaries — Hetsumiya, Nakatsumiya and Okutsumiya — enshrine the three Munakata goddesses: Tagitsuhime, Ichikishimahime and Tagirihime.
One of Japan's three great Benzaiten
From medieval times Shinto-Buddhist syncretism made Enoshima a great centre of Benzaiten worship. Revered by the warrior Minamoto no Yoritomo and by commoners alike, it became one of Japan's three great Benzaiten shrines, alongside Miyajima and Chikubu Island.
