History & Culture
Where the Worship Began
These wave-carved caves are the spiritual origin of Enoshima; tradition holds that En no Gyoja, Kukai, and others trained here, and that Benzaiten was first venerated within.
Honored Across the Ages
Over the centuries figures from Minamoto no Yoritomo to Edo pilgrims came to worship in the caves, whose depths were lit by lantern and candle.
