Kumamoto Castle
Kumamoto Castle was a castle in Japan from the Azuchi-Momoyama period to the Edo period in Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture (Kumamoto, Saita County, Higo Province). Also known as "Ginkgo Castle". Hirayama Castle was rebuilt after Kiyomasa Kato took over the medieval castle, and was the residence of the Hosokawa family of the Kumamoto Domain until the end of the Edo period after the Kato clan was deprived of their rank. In the Meiji period, it became a battleground for the Seinan War. Just before the Seinan War, buildings such as the main castle tower and palace were destroyed by fire, but turrets, castle gates, and walls such as the Uto turret still exist, and 13 buildings (11 turrets, 1 gate, and 1 wall) have been designated as important cultural properties of the country. In addition, the castle ruins have been designated as a special historical site of the country as "Kumamoto Castle Ruins".
