Takachiho Gorge
Takachihokyo is a canyon over the Gokase River in Mitai, Takachiho-cho, Nishiusuki-gun, Miyazaki Prefecture. It is a deep valley with developed columnar joints located 25 km southeast of Mt. Aso, with an average cliff height of 80 m and a height of 100 m, which extends for 7 km east to west. The sedimentary lava from Mt. Aso's volcanic activity (pyroclastic flow) is rapidly cooled, and it is a V-shaped canyon formed by erosion by the Gokase River. Based on the slate and sandstone layers of the Chichibu belt, pyroclastic sediments from the eruption of Mt. Aso about 120,000 years ago constitute the lower part of the river valley. In addition, pyroclastic sediments from the eruption of Mt. Aso about 90,000 years ago are found at the top of the Takachiho Gorge promenade, and the two are fused.

History & Culture
A Gorge of Lava Cliffs
Takachiho Gorge was carved where the Gokase River cut through ancient Mount Aso lava, leaving sheer columnar cliffs and the 17-meter Manai Falls. The area is steeped in Japanese creation myth.
