Mount Aso
Mt. Aso is a volcano located in the Aso region of Kumamoto Prefecture in central Kyushu, Japan. It is a large complex volcano with a caldera and an active volcano. The Aso Volcano consists of a caldera and a central crater hill, and Mt. Takadake, Mt. Nakadake, Mt. Neko, Mt. Eboshi, and Mt. Kishima are called Mt. Aso Gogaku. The highest point is Mt. Takadake at an altitude of 1,592 meters. The caldera covers an area of 380 square kilometers, 25 kilometers north and 25 kilometers north and 18 kilometers east and west (second only to Lake Kussharo in Japan). In 2007, it was selected as "Aso" as one of the top 100 geological sites in Japan. In October 2009, it was recognized as an "Aso Geopark" in Japan and a world geopark where you can experience the history of huge eruptions and live craters in areas inside and outside the caldera.

Mount Aso holds one of the world's largest calderas, some 25 km across, formed by colossal eruptions. Its active crater, Nakadake, still steams, and people live and farm within the ancient caldera.
