Beppu Onsen
Beppu Onsen is a collective term for hundreds of hot springs located throughout Beppu City, Oita Prefecture. In a broad sense, it is also called Beppu Onsenkyo, and the eight hot spring areas with different origins from ancient times are called Beppu Hachiyu. In a narrow sense, it refers to the hot spring town in the center of Beppu City, one of the hot spring areas that make up Beppu Hachiyu (see # Beppu Onsen). Beppu, known as a hot spring city, is the largest in Japan in terms of both the number of springs and the amount of water that flows out.

Japan's Greatest Hot-Spring Resort
Beppu produces more hot-spring water than anywhere else in Japan, steam rising across the whole town. Its vividly coloured 'hells' (jigoku) are scenic springs for viewing rather than bathing.
