Kurobe Dam is a dam dedicated to hydroelectric power generation built on the Kurobe River in the Kurobe River system flowing through Tateyama-machi, Nakashinagawa-gun, eastern Toyama Prefecture. Construction began in 1956. Under the command of Shiro Otagaki, 171 people died in the line of duty, and after seven years, power transmission began in January 1961 and was completed on June 5, 1963. It is located in the Kurobe Gorge between the Tateyama Mountains and the Gotateyama Mountains in the Northern Alps, about 40 kilometers southeast of Kurobe City and about 20 kilometers west of Omachi City in Nagano Prefecture (about 3 kilometers west of the prefectural border). The altitude is 1,454 meters.
