The Olympic Ridge of the Northern Alps
Hakuba Happo-one is a place worth a visit in Hakuba, Nagano. We've gathered 5 videos so you can explore it across the seasons on screen.
Happo-one is the flagship of the Hakuba valley: a long ridge climbing from the village toward the 3,000-metre peaks of the Northern Alps, with the steepest sustained terrain and the biggest vertical drop of any resort in the area. Its downhill course carried the men's and women's races of the 1998 Nagano Olympics, and the upper bowls still feel like high mountains rather than a groomed park. Lifts rise from several base areas on the edge of Hakuba's main town, so restaurants, bars and hot springs are a short walk from the slopes. On a clear morning the view from the top station — jagged alpine peaks on one side, the valley floor and distant Nagano on the other — is among the finest in Japanese skiing.

Lifts usually run from early December to early May. January is the powder month; February often brings the clearest views of the Alps; by March the lower slopes turn to spring snow while the top stays wintry. The valley's hot springs are open year-round.
History & Culture
Hakuba's First Big Lifts
Happo-one grew from a mountaineering base into a ski resort in the postwar years, and its annual Riesen Slalom race became a fixture of the Japanese ski calendar.
The Nagano Olympics
The downhill, super-G and combined events of the 1998 Winter Olympics were run on Happo-one's courses, and the start houses remain on the mountain.
Hakuba Valley Goes Global
A shared Hakuba Valley lift pass and a surge of visitors from Australia and Asia turned the village into Honshu's main international ski destination.
