Daio Wasabi Farm is Japan's largest wasabi farm, spanning roughly 15 hectares along the crystal-clear streams of Azumino. Snowmelt from the Northern Alps feeds the farm's waterways year-round, maintaining the cold, pure water that wasabi demands. The striking rows of vivid green plants beside traditional watermills made this a filming location for Akira Kurosawa's anthology film 'Dreams' (1990). Beyond the scenery, visitors can taste wasabi soft-serve ice cream, browse fresh wasabi products, and stroll along the peaceful riverside paths.
History & Culture
Farm Established
The Yanagisawa family founded the farm in 1915, harnessing the abundant groundwater of the Azumino basin—fed by snowmelt from Hotaka and other peaks of the Northern Alps—to cultivate wasabi on a large scale.
Kurosawa's 'Dreams'
The photogenic watermill scenery of Daio Wasabi Farm was selected as a filming location for the 'Village of the Watermills' episode of Akira Kurosawa's film 'Dreams,' bringing the farm to international attention.
