Shrine of the Four Pillars
Yohashira Shrine sits in the heart of Matsumoto beside the Metoba River, a short walk from Matsumoto Castle and the retro Nawate-dori street. It enshrines four deities together—hence its name, the 'Shrine of the Four Pillars'—and is beloved as a place where 'any wish comes true.' Though founded comparatively recently in the Meiji era, its tranquil tree-shaded grounds, vermilion bridge and riverside setting make it a favourite stop on a stroll through the old castle town, especially during its lively autumn festival.
History & Culture
Founded in the Meiji Era
The shrine was established in 1879, bringing together four principal Shinto deities of creation and fortune in a single hall in the centre of the modernising castle town of Matsumoto.
A Town-centre Place of Prayer
With its central location and reputation for granting wishes, Yohashira has become a daily place of prayer for residents and a natural waypoint for travellers exploring central Matsumoto.
