Gunkanjima (Hashima)
Hashima is an island located in Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture (formerly Takashima-cho, Nishi-Peki-gun). Its common name is Gunkanjima. It was also written "Hashima". From the Meiji period to the Showa period, it was flourished by submarine coal mines, and Japan's first reinforced concrete high-rise condominiums were built. In the 1960s, it had a population density higher than that of Tokyo. With the closure of the mountain in 1974 (Showa 49), the island has been uninhabited since the islanders left the island. In 2015 (2015), the International Conference on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) registered "Meiji Japan's Industrial Revolution Heritage Iron and Steel Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, and Coal Industry" as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As of 2026, aging is progressing, and conservation measures are a problem.

A Coal-Mining Island Abandoned
Hashima, nicknamed 'Battleship Island' for its silhouette, was a densely populated undersea coal-mining island until the mine closed in 1974. Its ruined concrete apartments are now a World Heritage Site.
