Shuri Castle
Shurijo Castle (Okinawan: Suigushiku) is a castle toe located in Nakayama Shuri, Ryukyu Kingdom (present-day Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture), in a hilly area overlooking Naha Port, which was once a base for overseas trade. It is now an urban park in the Shuri Castle District (commonly known as Shuri Castle Park) of the national Okinawa Memorial Park. After being destroyed by fire during World War II, it was rebuilt in 1992 with pillars, walls, tiles, and other colors in vermilion. However, seven major buildings, including the main hall, were destroyed by fire on October 31, 2019, and restoration work is underway. The wooden restoration of the main hall will be completed in the autumn of 2026. After that, it is planned to restore wooden structures such as the south hall, the north hall, the golden palace, the second floor palace, the guardhouse, and the nakagusuku palace.
