Yakushima is a mountainous island off southern Kyushu cloaked in ancient cedar forest, including the millennia-old Jomon Sugi. A UNESCO World Heritage Site of moss-draped ravines and frequent rain, its primeval woods are said to have inspired the film Princess Mononoke.
