Ritsurin Garden is one of Japan's most beautiful gardens, a sprawling strolling garden completed over roughly a century by the lords of the Takamatsu domain. Six ponds and thirteen landscaped hills are arranged against the forested backdrop of Mount Shiun, so that every turn of the winding paths reveals a new, carefully composed view—arched bridges, pine groves shaped over generations, and tea houses reflected in still water. Designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty, it is widely held to rival Japan's 'three great gardens.'
History & Culture
Built by the Takamatsu Lords
Begun in the early Edo period and completed over about a century by successive lords of the Matsudaira-led Takamatsu domain, Ritsurin grew into a masterpiece of daimyo garden design.
Opened to the Public
After the Meiji Restoration the garden opened to the public as a prefectural park, and was later designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty.
