A Roof Woven from the World's Letters
The first thing travellers meet on Ogijima is 'Ogijima's Soul,' the island's ferry terminal and community hall designed by the Spanish artist Jaume Plensa for the 2010 Setouchi Triennale. Its undulating white roof is cut from the letters of eight alphabets—Latin, Japanese, Arabic, Chinese and more—so that sunlight falls through the script in ever-shifting patterns. More than an artwork, it is a symbol of this small fishing island's revival through art.
