The Framed Garden
Hosen-in is a historic shrine and temple in Ohara, Kyoto. 18 traveler-shot videos let you feel the atmosphere and catch the highlights before you go.
Hosen-in is famous for its 'framed garden' (gakubuchi-teien): seated inside the hall, visitors view the garden through the square frame of the building's pillars and beams, as if gazing at a living painting. A magnificent five-needle pine, said to be some 700 years old, spreads across the scene, while a tea is served as you sit. The temple also preserves a 'blood ceiling' made from the floorboards of Fushimi Castle, a solemn relic of a 1600 siege.

Hosen-in developed as a residence and sub-temple connected with Shorin-in and Ohara's tradition of Buddhist chant.
The Blood Ceiling
Floorboards from Fushimi Castle, stained during the deaths of its defenders in 1600, were enshrined here as a ceiling to mourn and pray for the fallen.
