Birthplace of Tendai Chant
Tucked deeper in the wooded valley above Sanzen-in, Raigo-in is revered as the cradle of Tendai shomyo, the school of Buddhist liturgical chant. Founded in the early 12th century by the monk Ryonin, it gathered practitioners of sacred music in the secluded mountains of Ohara. Its quiet hall, enshrining three Buddhist images, and the moss-grown path that climbs further to the Otonashi Waterfall make it a contemplative retreat away from the crowds.
History & Culture
Founded by Ryonin
The monk Ryonin established Raigo-in as a centre for shomyo practice, unifying and transmitting the sacred chant of the Tendai school.
Music in the Mountains
