Togakushi Hōkōsha
One of Togakushi's five shrines, its hall stands atop more than 270 steep stone steps. Founded in 1058, it enshrines Ame-no-Uwaharu-no-Mikoto, revered for the arts, sewing, safe childbirth and warding off misfortune. The richly carved hall dates from the late Edo period.

The First Stop of the Pilgrimage
Hokosha, the lowest of Togakushi's shrines, is reached by a long stone stairway and enshrines a deity of learning, the arts, and safe childbirth.
An Ornate Wooden Hall
Its current hall, built in 1861, is admired for its elaborate dragon and figure carvings in the late-Edo style.
