The Great Buddha Hall
Todai-ji, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to the Daibutsu — a 15-metre bronze Great Buddha cast in the 8th century — housed in the Daibutsuden, one of the largest wooden buildings in the world. Founded by Emperor Shomu in 752 as the head of all provincial temples, it remains a towering symbol of Japan's ancient capital. The temple sits within Nara Park, where over a thousand free-roaming sacred deer greet visitors along the approach.
History & Culture
The Great Buddha Cast
Emperor Shomu ordered the casting of the Great Buddha to protect the nation; its grand eye-opening ceremony in 752 drew dignitaries from across Asia.
Rebuilding the Hall
Twice destroyed by war and fire, the Daibutsuden was last rebuilt in 1709; though smaller than the original, it remains an awe-inspiring feat of timber construction.
