A Temple of Tragic Love
Takiguchi-dera is a small thatched temple tucked into the bamboo and maple hills of Sagano, beside Gio-ji. It is steeped in the sorrowful Tale of the Heike story of the monk Takiguchi and the court lady Yokobue, whose ill-fated love still draws quiet visitors.

The Love of Takiguchi & Yokobue
The temple preserves the memory of Takiguchi Nyudo, a guard who renounced the world for love of the lady Yokobue — a parting immortalized in the Tale of the Heike.
Among Bamboo and Maples
Set on the wooded slopes of Sagano next to Gio-ji, the rustic temple is especially evocative in autumn, when maples redden over its mossy grounds.
