The Finest Cherry Blossoms Under Heaven
Takato Castle Ruins Park, on a hill in the former castle town of Takato, is celebrated as one of Japan's three great cherry-blossom sites. In spring some 1,500 Takato-kohigan cherry trees—a variety unique to the area, with small, deep-pink blossoms—burst into bloom across the old earthworks and bridges, earning the park its title, 'the finest cherry blossoms under heaven.' Built as a stronghold of the Takeda clan, the castle saw a famous last stand in 1582; today its moss-grown ramparts, vermilion bridge and views of the Southern Alps draw visitors in every season, most of all under a canopy of pink.
History & Culture
A Takeda Stronghold
Takato Castle was developed as a key fortress of the Takeda clan, guarding the Ina valley and the routes through the central mountains.
The Last Stand
In 1582 the castle's defender Nishina Morinobu made a celebrated last stand against the overwhelming forces of Oda Nobutada—a battle long remembered in the history of the fall of the Takeda.
