Maples in a Mirror
Ruriko-in is a Tendai temple in the hills of Yase, north of Kyoto, opened to visitors only during special spring and autumn seasons. It is famous for a single breathtaking sight: maples reflected mirror-like on a lacquered writing table in its second-floor study.

A Healing Place at Yase
Yase has been a place of rest and recuperation since ancient times; the villa that became Ruriko-in was developed in the early 20th century with a fine shoin and garden.
Maples in a Mirror Table
During its limited openings, visitors climb to the upper study where autumn maples reflect on the polished table — an image that has made the temple one of Kyoto's most photographed autumn scenes.
