A Garden on the Road to Ohara
Renge-ji is a serene Tendai temple at the foot of the hills on the road to Ohara in northern Kyoto. Rebuilt in the 17th century, it is loved for the pond garden viewed through its open shoin, and for the maples that blaze around it in autumn.
History & Culture
Revived in the Edo Period
Originally a temple elsewhere in the city, Renge-ji was rebuilt at its present site in 1662 with the support of the merchant Imai Kanei, drawing leading cultural figures of the day.
A Famous Garden Style
Its pond garden is a celebrated example of early-Edo design, and the distinctive stone lantern here gave its name to the 'Renge-ji style' lantern copied across Japan.
