Modern Zen in Stone
Reiun-in is a sub-temple of Tofuku-ji in Kyoto's Higashiyama hills. It is known above all for its modern Zen gardens by Mirei Shigemori, whose bold raked-gravel compositions reinterpret classical Buddhist cosmology.
History & Culture
A Zen Lineage
Founded in 1390, Reiun-in has long served as a sub-temple of the great Rinzai monastery Tofuku-ji, and was historically a place of learning for monks.
Modern Zen in Stone
Its gardens — 'Nine Mountains and Eight Seas' and 'Reclining Clouds' — were designed by Mirei Shigemori in 1970, fusing tradition with a strikingly modern hand.
