Kitano Ijinkan

Kitano-machi Yamamoto-dori is the name of a traditional building group preservation district located in the area of Kitano-machi and Yamamoto-dori 3-chome from 1-chome, Yamamoto-dori, Chuo-ku, Kobe-shi, Hyogo Prefecture. There are many Western-style buildings (Ijinkan) that were built during the Meiji Taisho period. Yamamoto-dori Street (Road) is also called "Ijinkan-dori Street". In Kitano Town and the Yamamoto-dori neighborhood, there are many Western-style houses (so-called Ijinkan) built from the Meiji 20s to the Taisho period (late 19th century to early 20th century), which are mixed with Japanese-style houses to form a harmonious townscape. Based on the Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties and the Kobe City Urban Landscape Ordinance, Kobe City has designated a district of about 750 meters from east to west and 400 meters from north to south where such traditional buildings are concentrated.

Homes of Meiji Merchants
After Kobe's port opened in 1868, foreign merchants built Western-style residences on the Kitano slopes. Many of these 'ijinkan' survive, giving the district its distinctive exotic atmosphere.
