Dotonbori is the dazzling heart of Osaka's food and nightlife, a canal-side street ablaze with giant neon signs — including the famous running Glico man and an enormous mechanical crab. This is the home of 'kuidaore' (eating until you drop): takoyaki, okonomiyaki, kushikatsu and more line the street, served from boisterous stalls and restaurants. By night the lights reflect on the canal, and the energy of Osaka's friendly, food-loving culture is on full display.
History & Culture
The Canal of Dotonbori
The canal was completed in 1615 by the merchant Yasui Doton, after whom it is named; the area soon blossomed into Osaka's great theatre and entertainment district.
The Neon Street
Through the 20th century the street became famous for its competitive, ever-larger neon and 3D signboards, evolving into the photogenic food mecca known worldwide today.
