Convent of the Heike Lady
On the quieter western side of the Ohara valley stands Jakko-in, a small, deeply atmospheric convent. It is forever linked to Kenreimon-in, daughter of Taira no Kiyomori and mother of the child-emperor Antoku: after the fall of the Heike clan in 1185, she retreated here to live out her days in prayer for the souls of her family—a story made famous by 'The Tale of the Heike.' Reached by a flight of stone steps, the serene hall and pond garden carry the melancholy beauty of that tale through every season.
History & Culture
Kenreimon-in's Retreat
After the Heike were destroyed at Dan-no-ura, Kenreimon-in took the tonsure and withdrew to Jakko-in, devoting her remaining years to prayer—a scene immortalised in 'The Tale of the Heike.'
Fire and Rebuilding
The main hall was lost to arson in 2000 and faithfully rebuilt by 2005, its principal Jizo image restored, allowing the historic convent to welcome visitors once more.
