Himeji Castle
Himeji Castle is a Japanese castle located in Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture. Major buildings such as the Tenshu and the Yagura, built in the early Edo period, still exist and are designated as national treasures and important cultural properties. In addition, the interior of Nakabori, including the main fortress, has been designated as a special historical site of the country as "Himeji Castle Ruins". It is also on the UNESCO World Heritage List and has been selected as one of Japan's 100 most famous castles. His other names are Hakurojo and Shirasagijo. Japan's Finest Surviving Castle
Completed in 1609 by Ikeda Terumasa, Himeji Castle survives with its original keep and is admired as the supreme example of Japanese castle architecture, nicknamed the 'White Heron' for its brilliant white walls.
Registered 1993
In 1993 it became one of Japan's first UNESCO World Heritage Sites, having escaped both feudal warfare and wartime bombing.
