Aoshima is a small subtropical island off the coast of Miyazaki City, ringed by the wave-cut rock formations known as the 'Devil's Washboard' (Oni no Sentakuita). The whole island is covered in some 5,000 betel palms and rare subtropical plants, and at its heart stands Aoshima Shrine, reached on foot across the connecting Yayoi Bridge.

History & Culture
Wave-Cut Rock Terraces
The ribbed rock platforms surrounding the island formed as tilted layers of sandstone and mudstone eroded, exposed at low tide as striking parallel ridges.
Aoshima Shrine and a Honeymoon Boom
At the island's heart, Aoshima Shrine enshrines the sea deities of the Hyūga myth cycle, said to bless love and safe childbirth. After Emperor Shōwa's 1934 visit brought the island national attention, Aoshima became one of postwar Japan's most popular honeymoon destinations.
