Aoshima is a small subtropical island off the coast of Miyazaki City, ringed by the wave-cut rock formations known as the 'Devil's Washboard' (Oni no Sentakuita). The whole island is covered in some 5,000 betel palms and rare subtropical plants, and at its heart stands Aoshima Shrine, reached on foot across the connecting Yayoi Bridge.
