Tofuku-ji Temple is a large head temple of the Rinzai sect's Tofuku-ji school located in 15-chome, Honmachi, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto City. Its sango (literally, "mountain name") is Enichisan. The principal image is Shaka Nyorai, which flourished through the medieval and early-modern ages as the fourth-ranked Zen temple in Kyoto's Five Mountains. Although it was reduced in size in modern times, it is still a large temple with 25 temple towers (Yamauchi temples). In the past, it had a seated statue of Shaka Nyorai with a height of five lengths, and in Yamashiro Province (part of present-day Kyoto Prefecture), it boasted the prestige of a great Buddha that was second only to the great Buddha of Unai-ji Temple and Hoko-ji Temple (the great Buddha of Kyoto).
