Nikko Toshogu

Nikko Toshogu Shrine is a shrine located in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. It is the general headquarters of the Toshogu Shrine in Japan, which enshrines Ieyasu Tokugawa, the first shogun of the Edo bakufu, as the main enshrined deity. Together with Kunozan Toshogu Shrine and Ueno Toshogu Shrine, it is one of the three major Toshogu Shrines. The official name is "Toshogu Shrine", which does not have a place name, but it is also called "Nikko Toshogu Shrine" to distinguish it from other Toshogu Shrines, and it is also described as "Nikko Toshogu Shrine" on the official website of Toshogu Shrine. Rinno-ji Temple, an adjacent Buddhist temple, named Mt. Nikko founded by Shodo in 766 during the Nara period. Later, he gathered Sonnen as a sacred place in the Kanto region and received donations from Minamoto no Yoritomo, the founder of the Kamakura bakufu.

Mausoleum of Ieyasu

Nikko Toshogu enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the Edo shogunate. Begun in 1617, it was rebuilt with extraordinary splendor by his grandson Iemitsu in 1636.

World Heritage

Yomeimon and Sacred Carvings

Its dazzling Yomeimon gate and carvings — including the 'three wise monkeys' and the sleeping cat — made it a World Heritage Site in 1999.
