Unusually for central Osaka, Nakazakicho largely escaped the air raids of World War II, preserving its narrow lanes and prewar nagaya row houses.

Since the 2000s those old houses have been reborn as cafes, vintage shops, and galleries, making the area a beloved retro neighborhood.
