Kegon Falls
Kegon Falls is a 97-meter fall located in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. The Ojirigawa River, which flows out of Lake Chuzenji, falls across a 7-meter-wide quay at normal water levels. Together with Fukuta Falls (Ibaraki Prefecture) and Nachi Falls (Wakayama Prefecture), it is a scenic spot and sightseeing spot that is considered one of the "Three Famous Waterfalls of Japan". Together with Kirifuri Falls and Uchimi Falls, they are also known as Nikko Sannen Falls, and Oku-Nikko Sannen Falls, along with Yutaki Falls and Ryuzu Falls. Together, they are sometimes referred to as Nikko Gonen Falls. The discoverer is said to be Shodo Shonin, and is said to have been named after the Buddhist sutra "Kegon-kyo Sutra". Since there are other waterfalls around the Kegon Valley, such as Ahan Falls, Hōshō Falls, Hannya Falls, and Nirvana Falls, it is thought that they were named in the same way from the five o'clock precepts.
