Thousands of Vermilion Torii
Fushimi Inari Taisha is the head shrine of some 30,000 Inari shrines across Japan, dedicated to the deity of rice, prosperity and business success. It is world-famous for the Senbon Torii — thousands of vermilion gates donated by worshippers that form glowing tunnels winding up the sacred Mount Inari. A full circuit of the mountain trails takes two to three hours, passing countless smaller shrines and fox statues, the messengers of Inari. Open day and night, it is one of the most visited and photographed sights in all of Japan.
History & Culture
Founding on Mount Inari
According to tradition the shrine was founded in 711 when the Inari deity was enshrined on the mountain, and it has been revered as a guardian of harvest and commerce ever since.
The Torii Tradition
As merchants prospered, the custom of donating torii in thanks for answered prayers spread widely, gradually building the famous tunnels of gates seen today.
