Zuiganji Temple

Zuigan-ji Temple is a Buddhist temple belonging to the Myoshin-ji school of the Rinzai Sect located in Matsushima-cho, Miyagi-gun, Miyagi Prefecture. It is located in Matsushima, one of the three sceneries in Japan, and its full name, including the sango, is Shoto Seiryuzan Zuiwan Fukuzenji Temple. Founded in the Heian period, the sect and temple name changed to Enfuku-ji Temple of the Tendai sect, Enfuku-ji Temple of the Kencho-ji school of the Rinzai sect, and Zuigan-ji Temple of the current Rinzai sect Myoshin-ji school. It was formerly known as Matsushima-dera Temple. The Basho Festival is held every year on the second Sunday of November, following the visit of the haiku poet Matsuo Basho in 1689 in the early Edo period. In addition, on New Year's Eve, the Fire Bell Parade, which is a prayer for fire protection, and the New Year's bell, which collides with the general public, are famous. In the precincts, there are two red and white plum trees called "Worong Plum", which are said to have been planted by Masamune Date.
