A Tendai Mountain Temple
Founded in 803 and attributed to the great monk Saicho, Yokokura-ji is a Tendai temple deep in the mountains of western Gifu. Its wealth of Heian-era Buddhist statues has earned it the nickname 'the Shosoin of Mino.'
Autumn Leaves and a Sacred Relic
The temple is one of Gifu's most celebrated autumn-leaf spots, its precincts ablaze with maples in November. It also preserves the mummified remains of the monk Myoshin, who died in meditation here in 1817.
