Kiyomizu-dera, a UNESCO World Heritage Site founded in 778, is one of Kyoto's most beloved temples. Its vast wooden main hall juts out over the hillside on towering pillars, forming the famous 'Stage of Kiyomizu' with sweeping views over the city and a sea of cherry and maple trees. Below, visitors drink from the Otowa Waterfall, whose three streams are said to grant health, success and love. The approach through the slopes of Higashiyama, lined with traditional shops, is part of the experience.
History & Culture
Founding by the Waterfall
The temple was founded beside the pure waters of the Otowa Waterfall, from which it takes its name ('kiyomizu' meaning clear water), and grew into a major centre of Kannon worship.
The Stage Rebuilt
The present main hall and its great stage were rebuilt in 1633 without using a single nail, an engineering feat that still draws admiration today.
