The Floating Torii on the Sea
On the sacred island of Miyajima, Itsukushima Shrine appears to float on the sea at high tide, its great vermilion torii rising from the waves. A UNESCO World Heritage Site dating in its current form to the 12th century, the shrine's elegant pillared corridors are built over the water so as not to disturb the holy ground of the island. At low tide visitors can walk out to the foot of the iconic gate. With wild deer, autumn maples and the backdrop of Mount Misen, Miyajima is one of Japan's most celebrated scenic spots.
History & Culture
Kiyomori's Grand Shrine
The powerful Taira no Kiyomori rebuilt the shrine on a magnificent scale in 1168, giving it the over-the-water form and aristocratic elegance admired today.
World Heritage Listing
The shrine and its forested backdrop were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, recognised for their harmony of architecture and nature.
